Barcelona have emerged as contenders for the signature of Fernando Torres and will do battle with Chelsea, according to reports.

The Blues have been preparing to offer a reported £50 million for the Liverpool striker and could make their move by the end of the month.

However, Torres has now become the subject of the Catalan club’s presidential election as president-elect Sandro Rosell has put him at the top of his wish-list

Current incumbent Joan Laporta, though, has identified Torres’ international partner David Villa as the replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

With interest in Torres intensifying, The Sun claims Chelsea are willing to offer him £190,000 a week and, if Barca do sign Valencia’s Villa their cause will be helped greatly.

Chelsea plan to balance their books by offloading Deco – who is nearing a switch to Fluminese, Michael Ballack, Juliano Beletti and Joe Cole.

Those players are likely to be replaced by cheaper options and another Anfield star, Yossi Benayoun, has been touted as Cole’s successor.
