It's safe to say that Jamie Carragher hasn't had the best few days of his life. The former Liverpool defender, 40, had to endure watching his old side lose to bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday, with salt rubbed into the wounds by having to perform his punditry duties for Sky Sports at the ground. And Carragher, who won 38 caps for England, let the emotion of the rivalry defeat get to him, with footage emerging of him spitting at a Manchester United fan and his 14-year-old daughter after being goaded about the scoreline.Having seemingly been subjected to a wave of abuse from the man as they drove away from Old Trafford following United's crucial 2-1 win, Carragher finally caved in and indefensibly spat in the direction of the car alongside him.Though he was taunted by the dad, Carragher's spit actually hit the fan's daughter in the passenger seat, who was obviously in disbelief at the incident.Sky have since suspended the pundit on the day that he was due to feature on his regular Monday Night Football slot alongside former United defender Gary Neville. And with Sky trying to deflect the attention away from Carragher and his absence on the show, Neville and host presenter David Jones were in the gantry at the Bet 365 Stadium instead of in the MNF studio. With the video of Carragher's disgusting gesture being shared across all media and social media outlets, a whole host of current and ex-sport-stars have weighed in with their verdicts on the actions that he has since apologised for.WBO world middleweight boxing champion Billy Joe Saunders, who is always ready to give his opinion, whether in boxing or any other sport, has blasted the pundit.

In response to a social media apology from Carragher, Saunders, 28, stated: “Should be a shamed of him self sick w***** I would have slapped him."

Though Carragher was missing from his duties during Manchester City's 2-0 win over Stoke last night, it is understood that Sky have not fully dismissed him after face-to-face meetings at Sky's HQ in London yesterday afternoon.

A Sky Sports statement said: "Sky takes this matter extremely seriously and strongly condemns Jamie's actions, we have made that clear to him in person today and suspended him from his duties. It falls well below the standards we expect of our people.”

Danish TV channel TV3 Sport had already dumped Carragher from their coverage of Manchester United's Champions League clash with Sevilla on Tuesday night.

Carragher will instead spend two weeks off screen as part of a break that was already booked prior to the incident coming to light.

His position within the company should become clearer either during or after that period, but it is hard to see him recovering from the saga that has rocked football today.
