Northampton midfielder Kevin Thornton has become the first out-of-contract player to commit himself to the club after he signed a new one-year deal.

Former Coventry man Thornton joined the Cobblers in January on a short-term basis and scored once in 11 appearances as Ian Sampson's side enjoyed a successful second half of the season.

Sampson said: "I am pleased Kevin has signed. It is clear that the he has a lot of talent and a lot of ability and the challenge for Kevin is to show that on a consistent basis next season."

He added: "If he can do that, we will have a very good player on our hands.

"He knows we are giving him a big opportunity and he is determined to make the most of that.

"We will get a good pre-season into him and that will certainly benefit him. He didn't have a pre-season last year and that always makes things hard for any player."
