Gianluigi Donnarumma only turned 19 last month but has already made 113 first team appearances for AC Milan. The Italy international, who became the second-youngest goalkeeper to start a match in the history of Italian football back in 2015, is now in his third season as Milan’s first-choice keeper. However, Donnarumma has come in for criticism for the first time in his short career this season, with fans and pundits alike unimpressed by some of his performances.Speculation is rife that the teenager wants to leave Milan, despite putting pen to paper on a four-year contract last summer.Donnarumma had initially rejected a contract offer from the Rossoneri before making a dramatic U-turn weeks later. His current deal is worth €6 million per year net, per ESPN, and features a €70 million release clause. It’s possible that the constant talk about his future had affected his performances.

Donnarumma made a terrible mistake v Arsenal

Donnarumma’s unconvincing form continued against Arsenal on Thursday night as he made one of the worst mistakes of his career so far.

Granit Xhaka’s long-range effort should have made for a comfortable save but Donnarumma made a complete hash of it and was mortified to see the ball spin into his own net.

Robinson speaks the truth about Donnarumma on Twitter

Despite that mistake, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson took to Twitter to defend the 6ft 5in shot-stopper.

The 38-year-old, who is best known for his spells with Leeds United, Tottenham and Blackburn, dropped two tweets about the teenager keeper…

“Donnarumma is the next Buffon without a shadow of a doubt. Class keeper & only 19. Wow 👏👏“

Donnarumma has been dubbed ‘the next Gianluigi Buffon’ since he first burst onto the scene and Robinson is convinced the teenager deserves that moniker.

The former Premier League goalkeeper, who only signed up to Twitter earlier this month, then added: “Despite that mistake. He's shown just how good he is. Potential is frightening @gigiodonna1”

Why Robinson is right about Donnarumma

Robinson’s assessment of Donnarumma is hard to disagree with.

All young players make mistakes - but mistakes that goalkeepers make always look worse because they inevitably cost teams goals.

David De Gea was famously written off by many people during his first couple of seasons with Manchester United and now look at him. Is there a better keeper in world football right now?

Donnarumma, like De Gea did when he was a teenager, possesses all the tools required to become one of the world’s best players in his position.

Don’t write him off after a few poor mistakes.
