Alexander Volkov made a huge statement in the main event of UFC Fight Night 127 at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday evening.

The 6’7” giant entered his meeting with Fabricio Werdum as the huge underdog but demonstrated remarkable patience and submission defence to outdo the former heavyweight champion.

Volkov saw off the Brazilian via a third-round TKO in a performance that should catch the attention of his rivals.

The win, which is his sixth on the bounce, is arguably the biggest of his career and has thrust his name into championship contention.

Speaking in his post-match interview, Volkov made no effort to hide his desire to fight for the belt in his next outing.

“I want a title shot in Russia though. That is what I really want,” the former Bellator heavyweight said, per the Express.

“I would be so excited to fight for the belt in Russia. I want to bring the UFC to my country for the first time. If I can bring the UFC to Russia, I will be a fighter who has made history.

“I am so happy to be a part of the group of Russian fighters now fighting in the UFC. Thank you to all the fans who support me.

“I have seen more and more fans supporting me and it is always growing so thank you to all of them.

“I feel great. This is the best feeling. Fabricio is a big name in the sport so this means that now, I am a huge name too.

“Now, I am looking for a title shot for sure so maybe it will happen very soon.”

While the result is truly significant in itself, Volkov is deservedly thrilled with the manner of his victory.

Knocking out one of the biggest names in the heavyweight division is no mean feat, especially when it involves downing the opponent with a quick combination before unloading one huge final blow.

One look at the video below and it’s clear Volkov had Werdum beaten all ends up.

Volkov has to be among those next in line to fight for the heavyweight title after Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier clash at UFC 226.

Guess we’ll to wait until after the summer to know for sure.
