"I think sometimes, managers get in their head that there's a player not for them. For me I think he could be brilliant but his manager will still find something wrong with him.”

The words of Paul Scholes about Luke Shaw after the Manchester United full-back was subbed off during half-time of Saturday’s FA Cup clash against Brighton and Hove Albion and then publicly criticised by his manager Jose Mourinho.

"I still believe he could be the best in the world and in the summer he could go to Tottenham or somewhere and he could improve.”

Shaw bore the brunt of Mourinho’s fierce criticism after the 2-0 victory.

The Portuguese coach said live on BT Sport that he was unhappy with Shaw’s performance, adding: "Luke, in the first half, every time they came in his corridor, the cross came in and a dangerous situation was coming.”

How Shaw has reacted to Mourinho's criticism

BBC Sport journalist Simon Stone has now revealed that Shaw has been left upset by Mourinho’s harsh comments and now plans to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Just when their working relationship was beginning to improve, suddenly it hits rock bottom.

Stone adds that those close to the 22-year-old are “furious” at the public nature of Mourinho’s criticism. You can understand why.

It’s now difficult to see a way back for Shaw, who United signed from Southampton in a deal worth £30 million in the summer of 2014.

Once tipped to become Europe’s best left-back, Shaw’s career at Old Trafford now appears to be over.
