It’s virtually impossible to look past Mohamed Salah as the best player in the Premier League right now.

The Egyptian winger has scored 36 goals in all competitions this term, breaking Fernando Torres’ record of 33 during his debut season in 2007-08.

His 28-goal league tally even puts him on track to surpass Alan Shearer, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez as the most prolific goalscorer in a single campaign.

Those three lead the way with 31 goals apiece, but with Salah having seven matches left to play, he has every chance of reeling them in.

Not a bad return for a player many believed Liverpool were taking a risk in signing for £36.9 million last summer.

But although the Reds are getting serious bang for their buck based on his price tag, Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes Salah and his ongoing brilliance will inadvertently create an issue for them.

“Ironically it is his performances on Merseyside which could — and almost certainly will — give them a huge problem before too long,” he said.

“Are you telling me when the rebuilding begins at Real — and they need it — he won’t be at the top of their wanted list?”

While it won’t be a popular opinion among the Anfield faithful, Wright points to recent history as a telling indicator of the situation that’s likely to eventuate with their star man.

“We’ve seen it so many times before. Real set their sights on someone and invariably they always get them…. And no amount of defiant stances matter in the end.

“I’ve a horrible feeling that, as far as Liverpool and Klopp are concerned, they will have another Philippe Coutinho situation on their hands sooner rather than later. And we all saw how that one played out in the end with the Brazilian heading off to Barcelona for £145million.”

The fact Salah is being considered a possible target for Madrid is a testament to his incredible form since arriving from Roma just last June.

It’s no secret Los Blancos usually get who they want in the transfer market, so the Reds hierarchy better have a solid contingency plan in place for whenever they come calling.
