The Miami Heat and Denver were involved in a thrilling contest on Monday night as it took double overtime to separate the two teams.

It was the Heat who eventually outlasted their opponents and secured a pulsating 149-141 win at American Airlines Arena.

Both teams were scoring at such a high rate that they broke the stat system inside the arena and there was still no official box score available two hours after the game.

Even the technology couldn't keep up with them as they went back and forth for 48 minutes and one extra five-minute overtime period wasn't enough to separate them either.

The Nuggets are one of the best offensive teams in the league and are used to putting up huge scoring figures but Miami certainly is not.

They are among the worst scoring teams in the league - averaging just 102 points per game - but they managed to hang with Denver and needed to set a historic mark to claim victory.

The 149 points scored by the Heat is a new franchise record, beating the previous best of 141, per Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald.

It's also the most points scored by any team this season. The Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder each scored 148 earlier in the year.

The Nuggets' poor defence played a big part in helping the home team secure their huge scoring total. Miami shot 54.9 percent from the field and hit 20 three-pointers on 55.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

They were able to do this despite being without the services of Dwyane Wade and Hassan Whiteside on the court which made it even more impressive.

In their absence, the unlikely duo of James Johnson and Kelly Olynyk took on the load offensively and produced memorable displays with career nights.

Johnson scored 31 points along with 11 rebounds, while Olynyk poured in 30 points off the bench on an efficient 11-of-16 shooting.

"There didn't deserve to be a loser," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said, per ESPN. "Guys probably really enjoyed playing in a game like this."

Johnson erupted in the overtime periods as 18 of his points came in those extra 10 minutes. This set a new franchise-high for the most points by a Heat player in overtime.

"Coach drew up that play for me to try to end the first overtime," Johnson said, per the Sun Sentinel. "It just kept flowing from there.

"The ball finds energy and guys were doing a great job of stopping our guys that were really on fire like Kelly Olynyk, Dragon, Wayne. I just happened to be open. The guys happened to find me and I just took the shots I happen to work on every day."

The win moves the Florida-based outfit into seventh in the east with a 38-33 record and seemingly on the verge of securing a playoff berth.

They have 11 games remaining to close out the campaign, starting with a home encounter with the New York Knicks on Wednesday.
