Manchester United's season has been up and down to say the least.

Jose Mourinho's men have had some success throughout this year; they're still in the FA Cup and lie second in the Premier league, behind an incredible Man City side.

But, Mourinho is clearly unhappy with his team's performances, having seemingly made Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw scapegoats for their failures this season.

The Portuguese was extremely critical of the latter after last weekend's 2-0 victory over Brighton, where he hooked the Englishman off at half-time for having a 'lack of desire'.

"I wanted to defend better," Mourinho said when asked to explain the substituiton.

"I wanted my defensive line to be more solid and I want more personality in my team because many times I felt that [Nemanja] Matic was an island of personality, desire, and control surrounded by a lack of personality, a lack of class, and a lack of desire."

GARY NEVILLE NAILS THE REAL PROBLEM AT MAN UNITED

Former Man United man Gary Neville has now had his say on the problems surrounding Shaw at Man United, and he does not agree with Mourinho pinning the blame on certain players.

Instead, the Englishman believes their problem is collective, with the team not showing the consistency that former Mourinho sides have been known for.

"To be honest with you, I can't help feeling the whole Luke Shaw issue is a distraction from the critical aspect of the season," Neville wrote in his column for Sky Sports.

"United spent a lot of money and the aspiration was to win the Premier League and go as far as they could in the Champions League and obviously neither have happened.

"The issue for me isn't the individuals - whether Shaw, Paul Pogba or Alexis Sanchez are underperforming - but that the team aren't very consistent, which over the course of Mourinho's career his teams have always been.

"If you look at the performances against Liverpool and then Sevilla, they were night and day, and this looks like a group of individuals rather than a group functioning as a team."

Spot on, Gary. Although certain players are underperforming, to make just a few individuals scapegoats is very unfair.

The team have not lived up to expectations this season, and that is not solely down to Shaw: The whole team must take a share of the blame.

NEVILLE THINKS THERE'S A LOT MORE TO COME FROM SHAW

Neville also stated his belief that Shaw was far from being the complete article, and that he still has the capacity to improve in the future.

"What I would say about Shaw is that the talent and ability are there, but his job as a footballer is to be prepared to perform every day and do every single thing in his life well to be a United player," Neville added.

"At the moment, his potential is not being recognised. I've got a great belief in Luke Shaw and the reality is it would be a great shame if he leaves United without fulfilling his potential.

"There's a lot of players out there with less ability but maximising their potential and I just hope he can get there."
