It’s the news that Daniel Bryan and WWE fans have been waiting for. After two long years, the company has finally cleared the current SmackDown LIVE general manager to make an in-ring return.
Bryan announced his retirement in February 2016 in relation to a history of concussions and a concerning test which caused him to think about his life outside of the ring.
Despite there being reports that WWE had no plans at all to have the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion compete in the ring again, the news has been welcomed by all and the reaction from fans on SmackDown LIVE this week spoke volumes.
There had been speculation that Bryan would leave WWE once his contract expires so he can make an in-ring return elsewhere. However, fans might be seeing a lot more from Bryan if he decides to stay on as WWE has now changed their stance, but whether or not that means Bryan decides to stay on remains to be seen.
The assumption is that WWE pulled the trigger on giving him medical clearance because they needed him to compete alongside Shane McMahon against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case as Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has revealed exactly what Bryan has been doing in order to receive full clearance.
So, the important thing to take into account that it wasn’t WWE saying yes just to have him at the Grandest Stage of Them All, the company genuinely believes he’s in a position to compete again with his health the priority.
IN RING RETURN
According to Bodyslam, Bryan first approached and asked Dr. Maroon what he needs to do so that he can officially be cleared. The first step of this was that Bryan was given a list of doctors to see - if he saw them and got the green light, then he would receive approval from Dr. Maroon.
Then one month ago, there was another important breakthrough as the University of Michigan doctors cleared Bryan and in that timeframe, Bryan also visited two additional doctors so that he can receive clearance.
Meltzer went on to add that despite WWE breaking the news on Tuesday, he heard the word going around backstage during Monday Night RAW that Bryan had been cleared. So, it’s possible that Bryan was cleared early on Monday and WWE decided to wait until Tuesday to announce it so that more fans tuned in.
Another note from Meltzer on this amazing news is that Bryan is cleared to wrestle either as much as he wants, or as much as the WWE needs him to wrestle.
This means fans shouldn’t expect a one-and-done sort of deal and his WrestleMania 34 contest - which is yet to be announced - could be followed up with some amazing dream matches the fans are desperate to see and equally, Bryan would want to compete in.
