Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker fancies an ‘attractive’ move to Arsenal after the German defender was linked with a move to the Emirates.

The Gunners have been linked with a host of defenders recently after doubts over the futures of William Gallas, Mikael Silvestre and Johan Djourou.

Mertesacker has made a big name for himself in Germany after playing for Bundesliga sides Hannover 96 and Bremen but admits he would fancy playing abroad.

Mertesacker, currently away with the German World Cup squad in Italy, told the Sunday Times: “There are certainly attractive clubs abroad. In particular clubs that have been playing for years in the Champions League.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is said to be keen to bolster his defence and has been linked with Gary Cahill today in a possible £14 million deal.

Standing at 6 foot 6 inches, Mertesacker would form a formidable back line with Thomas Vermaelen but Wenger will hope his price tag is not as high as Cahill’s.
