Gareth Southgate will use these next two friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy to test out two goalkeepers who could end up being England’s number one at the World Cup this summer.

Jordan Pickford is expected to start for England against the Dutch tonight while Jack Butland is likely to be picked for the Italy game next week.

Also in Southgate’s squad are West Ham’s Joe Hart and Burnley’s Nick Pope.

Southgate is likely to take three keepers to Russia, with Pickford and Butland the most likely candidates to earn a place in the 23-man squad.

The England boss may also decide to take Hart along for his experience and persona inside the dressing room.

The 30-year-old has endured a difficult two years since the Euro 2016 debacle and is no longer the commanding keeper of a few years ago.

However, former England No. 1 David Seaman, who represented his country on 75 occasions, believes that Hart should still be Southgate’s main man.

Seaman gives his honest opinion about Hart

The 54-year-old reckons the out-of-form West Ham keeper is still better than both Pickford and Butland.

“For me, Joe has got everything a goalkeeper needs,” Seaman told talkSPORT today. “He’s got all that experience, and you don’t just disregard that; he’s got 75 caps and played in the Champions League.

“The problem Joe’s got is he’s not playing. I know he played the last game for West Ham, but he needs to play for the rest of the season.

“I think Joe will definitely be in the three [for the World Cup]; he’s a quality goalkeeper and you don’t disregard all that experience he’s got."

Seaman: Hart is better than Butland and Pickford

“What if one of the young guys goes in and has a nightmare?" Seaman added.

“You need experience to fall back on, but at the moment, I don’t think Jack or Jordan are up to the standard of Joe yet.”

If you say so, David.

It’s hard to imagine too many English football fans agreeing with Seaman’s point of view.

Hart has failed to convince since moving to the London Stadium last summer and could have few complaints if Southgate decided to leave him at home this summer.

But Seaman clearly believes that experience counts for a lot at a World Cup - so maybe we shouldn’t be too surprised if Hart is the man in goal for England in their World Cup opener against Tunisia on June 18.
