As seems to be customary with major International tournaments, England got fans hopes up with a pretty decent display in a friendly.Gareth Southgate's side defeated Holland 1-0 in Amsterdam, with Manchester United's Jesse Lingard scoring the only goal of the game.It was an experimental lineup from the manager, with Kyle Walker being used next to John Stones and Harry Maguire in a back-three, with Kieran Trippier and Danny Rose out wide.In midfield, Jordan Henderson was used as a 'pivot', with Lingard and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain ahead of him as orthodox playmakers. It was essentially the polar opposite of the classic English 4-4-2 from yesteryear, but it seemed to work, with the Three Lions looking comfortable on the ball and solid defensively.Lingard's display was possibly the biggest positive, with his goal taking his tally to 13 for the season for club and country. And it seems his presence on the field has sparked some serious debate ahead of the World Cup, with England fans beginning to come to the conclusion that he should start over Dele Alli. It'd be a bold move, but it might not be a bad one from Southgate.

ENGLAND FANS SPARK DEBATE

Who'd have thought this would be a debate 12 months ago?

You can understand why Lingard might be favoured, with Alli much more suited to playing higher up behind a striker.

In Southgate's new system, it appears the number ten role has virtually been made redundant, with the front pair likely to be Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling - the latter excelled in the position v Holland.

Alli is also yet to ever really produce the goods in an England shirt, so a spell on the bench could perhaps be exactly the motivation he needs to dethrone Lingard and make a statement on the international circuit.

After the game, Lingard reflected on his match-winning performance, saying: “It's up there with my best moment. It's always an honour to score as well is a massive bonus. I took a bit of time, tried to concentrate on it and I tired to give the keeper the eyes.

"Of course I want to start (in Russia). When you work hard you get the rewards so from now I will carry on working hard and see where it gets me.”

If he can shine again vs Italy, Lingard may have sealed his place in the XI to face Tunisia in the summer.
