Sebastian Vettel has drawn first blood in the 2018 Formula One season in dramatic fashion at the Australian Grand Prix. The German started from third in the grid behind Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton in pole position for Mercedes.Similar to this time last year, though, Vettel pipped Lewis Hamilton to win the opening race of the campaign and prove Ferrari are up for taking the fight to Mercedes once again.A smooth getaway allowed the Briton to cruise much of the first half of the race at Albert Park, but what appears to be a huge misjudgement by his team has handed their Italian rivals maximum points. The turning point came through the introduction of a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) after Haas’ Romain Grosjean was forced to pull over and retire. With Hamilton leading Vettel at this stage, the intervention couldn’t have come at a worse time for Mercedes. The 33-year-old – who had already stopped to change tyres – was forced to slow down when his rival opted to follow suit with the VSC restrictions in place. The situation allowed Vettel to pit, complete a quick change of rubber and reenter the track ahead of a helpless Hamilton.Naturally, the controversy has only intensified since the German was able to remain at the front of the pack and pick up his second consecutive win in Melbourne.Check out the incident, as well as what Twitter had to say about it:

While it’s true cars in the pit lane are exempt from the on-track restrictions enforced by the VSC, fans clearly aren’t happy.

In an admission that will only compound Hamilton’s frustration, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says a computer error was to blame for the miscalculation.

The mixup only added to what was a gripping first day of the season, and there’s no question more will follow in the ensuing races.
