It's been seven years since Jordan Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland for £16 million and if truth be told, he hasn't turned into the player everyone hoped he would. Now 27 years old, Henderson is his club's captain and a full England international yet he's by no means a guaranteed starter in either set up.Jurgen Klopp has occasionally favoured the likes of Emre Can, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum over his skipper this season, which Steven Gerrard actually understands.Speaking in February, Gerrard conceded that Henderson slows down play for Liverpool and sometimes chooses the easier pass rather than trying something more risky."I think he splits opinion among the Liverpool supporters," said the Liverpool great. "I think I appreciate him a little bit more than most people because I played alongside him."I understand the job he does for the team. He’s a very unselfish individual and I think he plays like that as well."Sometimes Jordan plays the easy or safe pass when sometimes I think he has got that little bit more in his locker.

"He can open a defence up and he has got a decent range of passing but at times I think he does [play it too safe]."

Henderson has been compared to Gerrard ever since he arrived at Anfield in 2011 but it's safe to say he hasn't lived up to that supposed potential.

In fact, what's come of his Liverpool career actually makes what Joey Barton said about him in 2015 now look so true.

Barton has never been Henderson's biggest fan and three years ago he ranted on social media about how the 27-year-old will never be on the same level as Gerrard.

BARTON'S HENDERSON RANT

Ouch. Jamie Carragher tried to defend Henderson but the damage had already been done, with Barton shutting the Sky Sports pundit down, too.

Barton's point was simple: Henderson will never be the same player or captain as Gerrard was, so he shouldn't be compared and should instead be his own player.

Time is still on the Liverpool skipper's side to forge his own legacy at the club, but that all depends on whether he plays week in, week out.
