Robbie Fowler, Jamie Carragher, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard. Four Liverpool legends that graduated through the club’s academy before having incredible careers in the first-team.

Since then, plenty of players have been tipped to follow in their footsteps but, for one reason or another, that hasn’t quite happened.

Of course, Raheem Sterling was doing well until he upset the club by demanding a move to Manchester City.

But there are some highly-rated youngsters that have progressed through the academy only to fall by the wayside.

The most obvious case of that involves Adam Morgan.

Morgan was one of the most talented youngsters to be promoted to the first-team in a long, long time at Liverpool but it never quite worked out for him.

And, in a recent interview with RTE, the striker has told his sad story.

ADAM MORGAN'S SAD STORY

He made his first-team debut in a Europa League clash against Hearts in August 2012 before he was handed his first start in the return leg a week later, alongside Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suárez.

Fowler once dubbed Morgan “one of the best finishers I’ve seen for a long time,” while Carragher and Gerrard also sang his praises as a youngster. It looked as though he was set for an extremely bright future.

However, he managed just three appearances for Liverpool before his dream was ended.

"At the time I took it in my stride, things were going well. It’s when other things start happening and you are still labelled as the player who was meant to be the next Robbie Fowler, and Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have said things about you. That's when it gets hard,” Morgan admitted.

HE TUMBLED DOWN THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

He attempted to revive his career with a move to then-Championship side Yeovil - but it was tough for him.

"I moved 300 miles from home to Yeovil," recalled Morgan, "I was playing a man’s game which I wasn’t really used to and it was a little bit too much for me.

"I didn’t really get on with the manager and that happens in life. You are not going to get on with everybody and you just have to accept that.”

Morgan tumbled down the leagues with short spells at Accrington Stanley in League Two, Hemel Hempstead Town in the National League South and Colwyn Bay in the Northern Premier League Division.

MORGAN NEEDED HELP

From Liverpool to the Northern Premier League Division. It was quite a fall from grace and it was tough for Morgan. So tough, in fact, that he called upon a sports psychologist to help him out.

"I think 70% of football is mental. When something is in your head it can affect what you are doing on the pitch and off the pitch.

"You can’t perform properly unless you are strong mentally and I am really strong mentally now, I’ve had a lot off help off the pitch with a sports psychologist.

"I’ve got one now who really helps me. I’m not ashamed to say that I needed help and I never will be ashamed to say I needed help.”

But a move to Curzon Ashton of the National League North during the 2016/17 campaign was just what Morgan needed. He managed 18 goals in 27 matches before a move to Halifax Town in the National League ahead of the start of this current season.

And it was from there that he got a move to Sligo Rovers in the Irish Premier League, where he is impressing despite his side sitting 9th out of 10 in the division.

HE'S LOVING FOOTBALL ONCE AGAIN

But the 23-year-old now appears to be finding his feet and certainly appears to have his love for football back again.

"I feel like a little kid again, I love going to training. I’m not saying that because the cameras are here. I genuinely do. I have a smile on my face.

"My family and my girlfriend can see the enjoyment is back. I’m remembering how it used to feel. The best feeling for me is scoring a goal, it doesn’t matter where you do it....that feeling is great."

While he would have loved to have made the grade at Liverpool - or even elsewhere in the football league - it's just great to see Morgan enjoying football once again.
