Spain showed the football world just why they are contenders to win the World Cup as they taught Argentina a lesson last night.La Roja battered their opponents 6-1 at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium, sending out a message to their rivals.Diego Costa opened the scoring in the 12th minute and Isco got the first of three goals shortly afterwards.Nicolas Otamendi pulled a goal back shortly before half-time but Spain put their foot on the gas in the second half.Isco and Thiago Alcantara scored within 10 minutes of the restart to make it 4-1 and goals in quick succession from Iago Aspas and Isco, completing his hat-trick, sealed the win. This was an Argentina side that was without Lionel Messi due to a hamstring injury but that shouldn’t take anything away from Spain’s efforts. They were simply sublime.

De Gea produced a glorious pass

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea had a moment to forget when Otamendi scored in the first half.

The 27-year-old really should have kept the centre-back’s header out but his attempts were in vain.

De Gea more than made up for his error, though, with the assist for Aspas’s goal.

The ‘keeper played a glorious pass that split Argentina’s defence and found Aspas, who did the rest.

It was a brilliant people of distribution from Spain’s number one.

And it sent football fans into a frenzy on social media, with many suggesting he's up.

Jose Mourinho will be wondering whether De Gea can perform similar moments like that when he returns to Old Trafford.

The need for goalkeepers to be good with their feet has never been more important and De Gea showed he can be a threat from the back.

Isco was the star of the show, the Real Madrid playmaker showing just why he’s been linked with a move away from the Bernabeu in recent weeks.

"It's the first time I've scored three goals and I'm very happy," said Isco to Telecinco, per Sport. "Despite the end result it wasn't easy, they were very aggressive.

"When you don't have protagonism or a lot of minutes in your team, the national team gives you life. Here I count on the confidence of the coach.

"Real Madrid has a lot of very good players, and maybe I am the problem. I have the hope and desire to show that I can play as well in the national team and in my team."
