In March 2017, Madeira's Fuchal Airport was renamed the Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport and a specially made bust was unveiled in the player's honour. The legendary Real Madrid forward was born on the Portuguese island in 1985 and attended a special ceremony to rename the airport.Cristiano Ronaldo, 33, is Portugal's all-time leading goalscorer and famously captained them to success at Euro 2016.A bronze bust of Ronaldo's face - which was unveiled at the airport in Madeira last year - quickly went viral on the internet for all the wrong reasons."Look at it, it's terrible!" comedian James Corden roared on TV. "It looks like his face was bended like Beckham!"The sculptor Emanuel Jorge da Silva Santos was tracked down by Bleacher Report and was given another shot.Ronaldo certainly looks far more handsome in his new and improved bust.

Redemption indeed.

What Ronaldo said about the bust before the unveiling

After being shown the bust ahead of the ceremony, the Real Madrid star was happy for it to be unveiled to the world - but did have one request for the sculptor.

"[Ronaldo's] smile is ripped to the left side." the sculptor told Bleacher Report one year since the bust was unveiled.

"I made the wrinkles exactly as they are, but Ronaldo said that they looked a bit too protruding and asked if they could be thinned out.

"As we know, Ronaldo is vain. He likes to be all groomed up!

"When they tried it they—instead of thinning them out slightly—added a few strokes so [as] to conceal the wrinkles. It wasn't a detail of great relevance and it didn't change much of the wrinkles it had."

Wrinkles were surely the least of Ronaldo's worries!

There were suggestions that his powers were waning but the former Manchester United winger has been in sparkling form recently for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo has netted 21 goals in in his last 11 outings and has come from nowhere to challenge Leo Messi for the Pichichi award.
