Gerwyn Price's debut season in the Premier League could not have gone much worse. The Welshman was considered a surprise wildcard selection for the event, and was one of the favourites to be eliminated after the first round of games. And although his debut season got off to a steady start with two draws from his opening three games, 'The Iceman' had been defeated in his last four games prior to last night's match against Michael Smith, meaning he needed a win to prolong his stay in the event. But, with his hopes of staying in the Premier League beyond 'Judgement Night' hanging by a thread, Price was overpowered by his opponent and eventually succumbed to a 7-2 defeat. That means his match against Simon Whitlock next week will be a dead rubber for Price, of whom will be glad that his nightmare first season in the event will be coming to an end.

PRICE NEARLY ACHIEVED THE RIDICULOUS

With Price 6-2 down and Smith seemingly cruising to victory, it seemed the Welshman's race was run.

But, despite being well below his best for much of the contest, the 33-year-old attempted something ridiculous in the ninth leg, and remarkably nearly pulled it off.

Leaving himself with 120, the conventional route, and seemingly the only route, would be to go treble 20, single 20, double 20.

However, with Price accepting that he was edging towards another defeat, he remarkably attempted to hit three double 20's.

After hitting the target with his first two darts, the impossible was becoming a distinct possibility.

But unfortunately, Price slightly pulled his last dart, missing his intended target by a narrow margin.

It was a quite extraordinary effort by the former Rugby player. These type of shots are usually only seen at exhibition matches, and are very rarely attempted at televised TV tournaments.

Michael Smith's reaction said it all, who could only let out a wry smile; almost in sheer disbelief at what his opponent had just attempted.

DARTS FANS LOVED IT

His attempt went down really well with those viewing his attempt on Sky Sports, with many darts fans applauding the Welshman for his extraordinary effort.

JUDGEMENT NIGHT IS NEXT WEEK

With the bottom two set to be eliminated from the event next week, it will be a nervy round of games in Liverpool for two players in particular.

Peter Wright produced a brilliant comeback to snatch a point against Simon Whitlock last night, and he finds himself in pole position to survive the drop. A win against Daryl Gurney will keep his chances of qualifying for finals night at the O2 Arena later on this year alive.

If Wright loses, that could open the door for Mensur Suljovic, who is currently in the danger zone.

The massive worry for the Austrian is that he's facing Michael van Gerwen next week, meaning he will need to produce something special if he is to survive on Judgement Night.
