The highly anticipated rematch between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin is in jeopardy after the Nevada Athletic Commission filed a formal complaint against Canelo on Thursday after he tested positive for clenbuterol in two separate tests.

The rematch between Canelo and GGG is scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 5, but now this fight is in danger of no longer taking place. The Mexican faces a ban of a year from boxing, but this could get reduced to six months. He will plead his case on April 18 at his NSAC hearing in Vegas.

Floyd Mayweather, who fought against Canelo back in 2013, is in the Mexican's corner though, as he still wants the fight against Golovkin on May 5 to take place.

Speaking to Fight Hype, via Boxing Scene, the undefeated boxer said that Canelo should still be able to fight Golovkin as long as he undergoes vigorous drug test between now and the fight date since he has already passed three separate drug tests conducted in the month of March.

Mayweather said: "I'm not here to say anything bad about Triple G, or anything bad about Canelo. I think the fight still should happen. If they put the fight somewhere else [if they don't allow it in Las Vegas]... if he got busted or whatever he did. Say he got busted, from here all the way to the fight - there should be random blood and urine testing and they should fight."

Canelo tested positive on February 17 and 20 for the banned substance clenbuterol, which has fat burning properties and athletes have been known to use it to help them drop body fat and weight at a fast rate.

The Mexican's team believes that the positive tests were a result of contaminated meat that was inadvertently ingested during training camp in Mexico. Despite the issue of contaminated meat in Mexico, critics believe Canelo and his team did not take the necessary precautions to avoid their current dilemma from unfolding into the situation which it is today.

There are many boxing fans that still want the fight to go ahead despite the fact that Canelo has tested positive for a banned substance. However, the current situation for the Mexican doesn't look too promising. It looks as though the rematch could be delayed until later this year at the earliest.
