Kevin De Bruyne appeared nailed on to win the PFA’s Premier League Player of the Year award a few months ago. However, the Manchester City superstar now faces stiff competition from Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, whose recent form has been nothing short of sensational.Salah, who scored four goals for Liverpool in a 5-0 win over Watford before the international break, took his tally to 29 Premier League goals for the season on Saturday by netting a dramatic late winner away at Crystal Palace.Along with his 29 league goals, Salah has also registered 11 assists in England’s top division this term.De Bruyne, meanwhile, has provided 17 assists for his teammates but only managed to score seven goals.Despite his inferior statistics, the Belgian winger remains the bookmakers’ favourite to win the prestigious individual accolade later this month.Needless to say, he won’t be an undeserved winner if he does secure the award. His performances throughout the campaign have been exceptional and, just as importantly, he will have a Premier League winners’ medal on Saturday evening if City beat United at the Etihad Stadium.

Savage raises eyebrows will comment about Salah

But what Salah has achieved on an individual level this season is genuinely remarkable and he deserves all the plaudits that are coming his way.

While the Crystal Palace v Liverpool game was going on, however, former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage made some eyebrow-raising comments involving the red-hot Egypt international.

Savage was in the process of naming the three Premier League forwards that he would pick for his dream line-up at the start of next season when he stunned his BT Sport colleague Jermaine Jenas by insisting he would have Leroy Sane over Salah.

“Your big point was that you would have Sane over Salah,” Jenas said to Savage, offering him the chance to clarify his selection.

“Yeah,” Savage said. “If I had the chance at the start of next season to pick…”

But before he could even finish his sentence, Salah scored his winning goal against Palace, much to everyone’s amusement.

In fairness to Savage, he laughed it off and joked: “I tell you what, I’d have Salah over Sane! He’s brilliant!”

But the damage had been done: Salah had made Savage look rather clueless.
