Hiring Alan Pardew proved to be a disastrous decision for West Bromwich Albion.

Upon hiring the former Newcastle boss on 29 November, West Brom were not in a perilous position.

Although the Baggies were not performing as expected, they were still positioned above the relegation zone with 12 points from 14 games.

But they fared much worse after Pardew was appointed manager.

The 56-year-old lasted just over four months at the club and was finally sacked on Monday. He won just one out of his 18 Premier League games, only taking away eight points from a possible 54.

Needless to say, West Brom's woeful form under Pardew left them rock bottom in the Premier League, 10 points away from safety.

With just six games left to play in the league, they need a miracle to beat the drop.

PARDEW SACKED IN AN EMBARRASSING WAY

It's no surprise that Pardew lost his job, but a report from The Times has emerged suggesting he was sacked in a brutal way.

Instead of sitting down with Pardew to discuss the decision, West Brom chiefs informed him of their decision via phone call.

Pardew was therefore not given the chance to make a case for himself in person, which tells you everything you need to know about what West Brom thought about him.

The Times also state that even before the Baggies' defeat at home to Burnley, the plan was always to sack Pardew at the end of the season.

But they decided to call time on his tenure early after seeing thousands of season ticket-holders staying away and others throwing their tickets on to the pitch in disgust on Saturday.

What a nightmare few months it has been for both West Brom and Pardew.

Considering he leaves the club with the seventh worst record in Premier League history, it perhaps is not surprising that he was sacked in such a brutal manner.

THE MAIN CANDIDATES FOR THE JOB

The Times state that Michael Appleton and Dean Smith are the leading early contenders to take the job.

Derek McInnes, Craig Shakespeare and Graham Potter are also in the frame, whereas Mick McCarthy is also being considered.
