Dennis Smith Jr. had one of the best dunks of the night, and probably one of the best dunks of the season, for the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night during their win against the Portland Trail Blazers. The Mavericks defeated the Trail Blazers 115-109 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas last night, with Smith being the home team's best player on the court, as he finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. He also had two steals and was 8-of-16 in shooting from the field. The rookie was not only one of the best players on the court on the night, but he also had one of the best dunks of the night during the fourth quarter of the contest. One that would fit perfectly in the slam dunk contest. With around a minute to go in the game, Smith battled with the Trail Blazers' Damian Lillard for a loose ball in his own half. After winning possession, the Mavericks rookie dribbled the ball down towards Portland's basket with no real pressure by the opposition. With so much time on his hands as no Trail Blazers players were closing in on him, Smith decided to showboat a little bit, as he bounced the ball high to set himself up for an amazing alley-oop dunk, which received a huge cheer from those inside the American Airlines Center.

This play definitely shows the Mavericks that, despite the fact they didn't qualify for the playoffs this year and Dirk Nowitzki isn't getting any younger, there is a promising future for the franchise with Smith. He is averaging 15.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, five assists, and one steal per game this season.

Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said to ESPN about the dunk after the game: "Should have pulled that one out at the All-Star Game. That was unbelievable."

Smith explained the play as well, saying there wasn't much time for him to process what to do due to the fast play of the breakaway, as he said: "I didn't have time to get a windmill in or stuff like so I tapped it in when I got it."

The Mavericks play next when they visit Orlando to play against the Magic later today.
