Liverpool fans are on cloud nine following Wednesday's 3-0 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League - and understandably so.

City have been nigh-on unstoppable in all competitions this season, yet Liverpool tore them to pieces in a stunning night at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah - who else? - opened the scoring by being in the right place at the right time before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made it 2-0 with a 25-yard screamer.

Sadio Mane then added a third with his head in the 31st minute to complete the rout, with Pep Guardiola's men unable to recover.

Should Liverpool see out the tie in the second leg they'll be the envy of the Premier League by becoming the only English team to reach the semi-finals.

And that must hurt Manchester United fans, who will hate seeing their rivals thrive having been knocked out by Sevilla in the previous round.

Whereas United's defensive approach cost them against the Spanish side, Liverpool are destroying everyone in their path with their heavy metal attacking style.

LIVERPOOL OVERTAKING UNITED?

There's a growing feeling that Jurgen Klopp's side are on to something special and may even challenge the likes of City and United for the Premier League next season.

However, one man who seemingly isn't concerned by any uprise on Merseyside is United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville.

The former right-back has been locked in debate this morning with Liverpool fans over whether they have what it takes to go the distance in the Premier League.

One fan tried to goad Neville by saying it hurts him that United are in decline while Liverpool are on the rise. Check out the tweet below.

Neville had the perfect response, though. Liverpool are infamous for selling their best players - Raheem Sterling, Luis Suarez, Philippe Coutinho etc. - so Neville used that as ammo.

"If you could keep a player that's half decent I'd be worried..." replied Neville in his tweet, which is racking up the likes and retweets from United fans.

It must be said that Neville has a point. Liverpool always seem to be on the brink of something special but get knocked back by selling their best players.

Salah is now the Reds' talisman and with reported interest from Real Madrid, Klopp must do everything in his power to ensure the Egyptian stays this summer - and the next.
