Spanish playmaker Xavi believes Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard can lead England to World Cup glory.

The Barcelona midfielder admits to being impressed by the English pair, believing the Liverpool and Chelsea duo have helped make the Three Lions one of the pre-tournament favourites.

"Lampard and Gerrard, for me, are number one players," the 30-year-old told

"I like them because they play in my position, I notice them more and they are fantastic players. I like the way they play because they see football very well, and they score goals and are always prepared to shoot."

Xavi is expected to play a pivotal role for his country in South Africa this summer, but compared his country to England with regards to previous failures on the biggest stage when they perhaps should have done better.

"England for me is like Spain. They can be one of the favourites in the World Cup but previously they haven't done much.

"England has possibilities, in the players, as well as having Capello. He has demonstrated he is a very good coach wherever he has gone. The coach is good and the players are too, but I think the favourites are the teams who have won it previously."

The lifelong Barca boy is expected to feature for his country tonight in their final warm-up match against Poland, although Premier League star Fernando Torres is struggling to be involved as he recovers from injury.
