Judging by Jurgen Klopp's mood after the Champions League quarter-final with Manchester City, it was hard to believe the Reds had won 3-0.There isn't a Liverpool fan alive who will think the job is completely done, but they just might have started dreaming about the semi-final and beyond. It was a traumatic night for Pep Guardiola's side, but not merely because of the result. As the team bus rolled into the stadium, City's staff were subject to an inexcusable attack as bottles, flares and other projectiles were thrown.Liverpool immediately released a statement to "apologise unreservedly to Pep Guardiola, his players, staff and officials caught up in the incident."For most fans in the Kop, nothing can dampen the memories of that night. However, Klopp has now given his thoughts on the incident, and it's a little heart-wrenching to see him so disappointed in his own supporters.

Fan antics 'killed everything'

"I have to say apologies again for how things happened before the game," he told Sky Sports.

"It's so strange. You go with your own bus through the crowd and it feels fantastic and it's great. It's support, it's passion.

"But we came into the stadium and the first thing I heard was they had smashed the bus of Manchester City and it kills everything.

"You can't feel it anymore. You give everyone the opportunity to do something good and because of a few idiots it might never happen again."

Klopp is absolutely right - there was the potential for Liverpool fans to create something special and it's now been remembered for all the wrong reasons.

There's nothing quite like the atmosphere at Anfield on a European night, but Wednesday's scenes were undoubtedly a step too far; it was reminiscent of the ugly spectacle in the last game at Upton Park between West Ham and Manchester United two seasons ago and didn't do English football's reputation any favours.

It remains to be seen whether the club face any consequences, though UEFA have already opened formal proceedings against them.

When Everton make the short trip across the city on Saturday, police will now be all the more on their guard.
