UFC President Dana White has shed some light as to why we are getting an interim welterweight title fight.

It’s been well established that UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is not the biggest fan favorite in the world of MMA.

Woodley, who is coming off recent shoulder surgery, has stated publicly that he doesn’t think there are any clear contenders in the division right now.

Woodley continues to say that former UFC middleweight and welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is the opponent he wants and that he will tell fighters such as Rafael dos Anjos, Colby Covington, and Kamaru Usman to wait a little longer.

The welterweight champion is all about wanting to take money fights these days.

The UFC announced on Friday that RDA, who is a former lightweight champion, will be fighting Colby Covington for the interim welterweight belt at UFC 225 and not UFC 224 like originally believed in Brazil.

This fight will happen as Woodley sits out indefinitely with an injury. During the UFC 25 Anniversary press conference, White explained why this fight is happening at this event as well as the interim title being created. Here is what he had to say (transcript courtesy of LowKickMMA):

“He’s injured. He’s been out for awhile. We’ve been trying to get him to fight. He’s not taking any fights. He sent us a doctor’s note from the best shoulder specialist in the country, who said he’s out til August. We’re not going to be in a position where we jam up a division, so we’re going to do the fight.”

Covington also chimed in the situation and why this fight isn’t happening in Brazil.

“I’m the King of Brazil. I owe it to the fans of Brazil to go back there and put on a show for them. Brazil wasn’t ready for me, so Dana had to put it in the U.S.”

UFC 225 pay-per-view event slated to go down on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.

The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker is slated to defend his title against Yoel Romero at this upcoming pay-per-view event, which will serve as the main event.

The promotion will announce more bouts for the event in the coming weeks.
