It's almost two years since Amir Khan last stepped into the ring.

Injuries have prevented him from making a comeback since his defeat to Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in May 2016.

Ironically, he's at least in a better position than the Mexican, who has been temporarily suspended for failing a drugs test.

While he took a brief hiatus from boxing to enter the I'm a Celebrity jungle, the British welterweight is now attempting to steer himself back into a position where he can challenge for titles.

First up, he will have to overcome Phil Lo Greco in Liverpool on April 21.

Sadly, there has been a distinct lack of interest surrounding Khan's next bout, even if his three-fight deal with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing suggests there is more in the pipeline for the former Olympic silver medallist.

January's press conference has thus far been the most exciting flashpoint in the build-up, with Khan throwing a glass of water at Lo Greco.

Lo Greco went too far

The self-proclaimed 'Italian Sensation' had aimed a jibe at his well-documented marital problems and it proved the final straw.

“The defeat by Canelo started a losing streak – then he lost his family, his wife and then he posted on Twitter telling the world heavyweight champion [Anthony Joshua] he could have his leftovers.”

Wow - pretty unacceptable. It was a somewhat obvious and unimaginative jibe, but one which he knew would rile the 31-year-old.

Despite the pair apologising to each other, Khan hasn't forgotten Lo Greco's words and has vowed to use them against him in the fight.

Khan responds

"He got personal at the press conference and that's not right - he's going to pay for that," he said, via Sky Sports.

"Talk about boxing, talk about me getting KO'd or getting beat - but going into my personal life is disrespectful and that's made me angry.

"I want to show him who's boss and put it on him, he needs to watch what he says. He's an idiot and he's going to be put in his place.

"The fans hate him now and he's going to be in for a hostile night from the fans in Liverpool. British fans are the best in the world and he should've come here wanting to get them on his side, but there's no chance that will happen."

Khan knows he absolutely cannot risk another knockout - he himself has won 54% of his fights by that method, while Lo Greco has knocked out his opponents in 48% of his bouts.

"I cannot make any mistake and what he's said in the press conference has only added more fuel to the fire," Khan added.

It's certainly going to be interesting.
