There are some magnificent goalkeepers currently plying their trade at Europe’s top clubs.

But which one is the best?

Ultimately that’s down to personal preference but, after their exploits over the past few seasons, most football fans would probably name either Manchester United’s David de Gea or Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer.

De Gea is probably out on top at the moment, mainly because of his world-class performances but also because Neuer has missed most of the 2017-18 campaign through injury.

However, the Germany international will be determined to prove that he’s still the best in the business when the 2018 World Cup finals get underway in Russia this summer.

Other names who deserve a mention when talking about the world’s best ‘keepers include Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon, AS Roma’s Alisson Becker and Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak. Marc-Andre ter Stegen is another ‘keeper who deserves recognition after his performances for Barcelona over the past couple of seasons.

The 25-year-old, who joined Barça from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, doesn’t always receive the credit that he deserves because he’s often overshadowed by his outfield teammates. However, there’s no doubt that he’s a crucial player for Barça, particularly because of his ability to start moves from the back.

Ter Stegen names the world's top five 'keepers

Ahead of his side’s Champions League quarter-final second leg against Roma, Ter Stegen named the five players that he thinks are currently the world’s best.

He didn’t name himself - full marks for modesty there, Marc-Andre - but he still omitted some big names including Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas, Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma.

"There are many goalkeepers who make the difference," Ter Stegen was quoted as saying by the Mirror.

When asked to name the ‘keepers he thinks are the best, he added: "De Gea, Neuer, Buffon, Alisson and Ederson."

Do you agree with his list?

It’s a decent list, sure, although not everybody will agree with his picks.

Is Buffon, who turned 40 in January, still among the best goalkeepers in the world? Although he’s unquestionably a legend of the game, his performances this season have sometimes been less than convincing.

Manchester City’s Ederson, meanwhile, has enjoyed a fantastic debut season in England but is it too early to call him one of the world’s best ‘keepers?

And surely Oblak should be in there?

His top five is guaranteed to spark some fierce debate. We'd love to know what you think.
