During the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final tie between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield, we saw what an impact fans can have on a football match.Liverpool supporters created a magnificent atmosphere before and during last week’s game - and their team went on to record a deserved 3-0 victory.Anfield on a big European night is special - really special - but the Etihad Stadium, Man City’s home since 2003, doesn’t quite have the same reputation or fear factor for opposition fans and players.City have had trouble filling their ground in recent years, even when playing against some of the biggest clubs in Europe. However, a huge attendance was expected for Tuesday night’s second leg against Jurgen Klopp’s side.City had it all to do after the first leg, though, and their chances of reaching the Champions League semi-finals appeared slim.An away goal from Liverpool would leave City requiring five goals to advance to the final four.

What Man City did before kick-off

Before the match, perhaps in an attempt to improve the atmosphere in time for kick-off, City decided that it would be a good idea to dramatically announce the players’ names as they emerged from the coach. No, really.

As you can probably imagine, this has not gone down well with football fans on social media who have seen the footage posted on Twitter.

Whether you’re a member of the ‘Against Modern Football’ brigade or not, this is all a bit cringeworthy, isn’t it?

Announcing the players’ names, one by one, while music blares in the background just seems a bit… urgh.

Fans blast 'embarrassing' pre-match scenes

We’re not sure it even had the desired effect, either.

As Neil Jones of Goal.com pointed out, most of the pre-match atmosphere was coming from the away supporters, who were keen to replicate the same raucous atmosphere inside the Etihad.

Who needs gimmicks, eh?

Do you think the footage is a bit cringe - or should people get over it and embrace all aspects of modern football? Have your say below.
