Liverpool advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League after overcoming Premier League rivals, Manchester City. The Reds put in a scintillating performance at Anfield a week ago, meaning they travelled to Tuesday night's game at the Etihad Stadium with a commanding 3-0 lead. But they got off to an awful start.Gabriel Jesus opened the scoring after just two minutes which only added to the nerves felt by the away side. And Liverpool rode their luck throughout the rest of the half, with a seemingly legitimate Leroy Sane goal being ruled offside. But Jurgen Klopp's men put the tie to the bed in the second half, with Mohamed Salah giving the away side a vital away goal 10 minutes after the restart.Roberto Firmino then ensured Liverpool's progression when he netted 13 minutes from time. That means Liverpool emerged from the Etihad as 2-1 winners, meaning they progressed 5-1 on aggregate. What a result.

ONE PLAYER IS BEING PRAISED

It was not an easy ride for the five-time European Champions, but they showed their class by disposing of the Premier League leaders.

There were a number of good performances across the park for Liverpool, but fans were pinpointing one player in particular to have stood out.

That player? None other than Dejan Lovren.

The Croatian has had his fair share of critics this year, but he was nothing short of sensational against Man City on Tuesday night.

And many were noting that he was Liverpool's best player on Tuesday night. Just a few months ago, that would have been pretty much unthinkable.

They're right. Lovren was top class.

He has looked a different player since Liverpool decided to buy Virgil Van Dijk in January.

Many Liverpool fans have wanted him sold after a number of mistakes this season, but they were pleasantly surprised with his showing against Man City.

Maybe Liverpool don't have to buy another centre-back in the summer to partner Van Dijk after all.
