Gianluigi Buffon has named the five goalkeepers he thinks are currently the world’s best

Juventus v Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League Quarter Final Leg One

Football fans are renowned for having strong opinions about all aspects of the sport and that’s one of the reasons which makes the beautiful game so special.

For example, some of us firmly believe that Lionel Messi is the world’s greatest player, others are convinced it’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

You might feel that one of those two superstars deserve to be called the greatest footballer of all time. But other football fans would say that’s nonsense and point towards Pele, Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff, Zinedine Zidane, Alfredo Di Stefano and so on.

You might even think that Peter Crouch is the greatest player in football history. You’re not wrong necessarily (just a bit crazy) because it all boils down to personal opinion. There’s no right or wrong answer.

Debates like these will subsequently never be settled, but they’re still fun to have down the pub with your mates.

One of the biggest debates in football right now is about goalkeepers. Specifically, who the world’s best ‘keeper is at this moment in time.

Most football fans, you suspect, would now say it’s Manchester United’s David de Gea. The Spaniard has been magnificent over the past few seasons and has arguably surpassed Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer, who has missed most of the current campaign through injury, as the world’s best player in his position.

Buffon disagrees with Ter Stegen's list

However, one man who would not agree with this summary is none other than Juventus and Italy legend Gianluigi Buffon.

The 40-year-old was named as one of the world’s top five ‘keepers by Barcelona’s excellent No. 1 Marc-Andre ter Stegen on Tuesday along with De Gea, Neuer, Alisson Becker and Ederson.

Buffon returned the favour by naming the German as one of his top five goalkeepers in the world right now.

But incredibly, he does not think that De Gea is one of the top five keepers on the planet currently.

Buffon's top five goalkeepers revealed

Per the Independent, Buffon omitted the United star from his list and instead named Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, Real Madrid’s Keylor Navas and Ederson along with Neuer and Ter Stegen.

You’re a legend, Gigi, but not having De Gea in your top five is utterly bizarre.

Juventus Press Conference

We can only suspect that the World Cup winner hasn’t seen much of the 27-year-old this season.

Or perhaps he simply doesn’t rate him, who knows.

Either way, it’s a strange one.

It’s hard to imagine many football fans concurring with Buffon’s top five.
