Javier Mascherano has cast doubt on his Liverpool future by admitting he is learning Italian.

The Argentina captain is thought to be top of former boss Rafael Benitez’s Inter Milan transfer wish list.

Benitez, who will be named as Inter manager today, has been linked with a number of his former charges and the former West Ham player has set alarm bells ringing with this revelation.

Mascherano said: “I am learning Italian while I’m here. I don’t know what I’ll do after the tournament.”

After a season that saw them slip out of the Premier League’s top four, Liverpool are a club in crisis.

Yesterday reports claimed Yossi Benayoun has agreed a deal with Chelsea, meanwhile Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres have been linked with moves away.

The Anfield side are currently looking for a new manager, with Roy Hodgson and Martin O’Neill at the top of their list, and the new man will have a big job on his hands to persuade their top stars not to jump ship.
