It’s amazing the difference a week can make.Last Tuesday, Real Madrid went to Turin and brushed aside an experienced Juventus side 3-0.They were surely through to the semi-finals.Eight days later and it was Juventus winning 3-0 at the Bernabeu to level the scores on aggregate.Fortunately for Madrid, they were given an injury-time penalty and Cristiano Ronaldo stepped forward to send them through. But why was their such a difference between the two legs?Well, Madrid will point to the fact they were without captain Sergio Ramos.

THEY STRUGGLED WITHOUT SERGIO RAMOS

The Spaniard was suspended for picking up another yellow card in the first-leg last week and was seen in the stands during the match.

However, towards the end of the game, Ramos was seen pitchside to support his teammates.

It was something that Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri took exception to when Los Blancos were awarded their last-gasp penalty with cameras showing the Juve boss shouting at the suspended defender.

And several reports suggest that if referee Michael Oliver includes it in his match-report, Ramos could be banned for Madrid’s semi-final first-leg against either Liverpool, Bayern Munich or Roma.

Rules state that Ramos needed to stay in the stands and by coming pitchside during the match, he broke UEFA regulations.

In fact, Madrid have fallen foul of this rule previously.

Xabi Alonso was suspended for the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid in 2014 but was seen sitting near the pitch during extra-time. He was banned for one match for the start of the following season's competition.

And if Ramos is banned, it could be very bad news for Madrid considering the way they defended without him in the second-leg against Juve.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard certainly wasn’t praising their defensive display without their skipper.

"With Ramos out they were all over the place defensively," Gerrard said.

If Ramos is banned, it will be a major boost to their semi-final opponents.
