It’s fair to say it was a fantastic week of European football. It started on Tuesday as Roma did the unthinkable vs Barcelona, while Liverpool beat Manchester City for the second time in the space of six days. Then, on Wednesday, Juventus came within minutes of beating Real Madrid 3-0 at the Bernabeu before a much-disputed Cristiano Ronaldo penalty sent the holders through.Fans probably weren’t expecting much from the Europa League on Thursday but Europe’s lesser competition also produced the goods.Marseille came from 1-0 down in the first-leg to win 5-3 on aggregate against RB Leipzig, Salzburg came from 4-2 down in the first-leg to win 6-5 on aggregate while Arsenal were given an almighty scare against CSKA Moscow. The Gunners had won 4-1 in the first-leg at the Emirates and, after fielding a strong side in Russia, were expected to ease through to the last-four.However, after 50 minutes, CSKA needed just one more goal to qualify after taking a two-goal lead.

ARSENAL INTO THE LAST-FOUR

Surely not.

Arsenal survived, though.

Danny Welbeck played a brilliant one-two with Mohamed Elneny and finished comfortably to give Arsenal a two-goal cushion once again.

And it was well and truly game over in stoppage time when Elneny surged forward before playing a lovely through ball for Aaron Ramsey to finish.

It finished 2-2 and Arsenal had a lot to thank Elneny for.

Two assists and an all-around brilliant performance.

But it was a moment in the 90th-minute that many supporters were most pleased with.

Arsene Wenger’s were 2-1 down heading into injury-time meaning CSKA still needed two more goals. But Elneny wasn’t taking any chances.

He can be seen chasing the ball wildly for about 20 seconds, trying to win back possession.

Brilliant work-rate.

Elneny is really starting to show Arsenal fans what he’s capable of this season and is becoming an important part of Wenger’s squad.

He’ll need to continue this fine form if the north London side are to win the Europa League this season, though.

Arsenal will enter the semi-finals of the competition with Atletico Madrid, Marseille and Salzburg.

But Wenger wasn’t willing to name which side he wanted to be drawn against on Friday morning.

"Looking at all the results as a whole picture in Europe this week, you would say that teams have become closer and the games are very open and everything is possible in every single game," Wenger said.

"Everybody speaks about Atletico Madrid that they look the strongest team on paper but you must say when you look at the results that Salzburg have done again.

"I am from France and Marseille are in there as well and that is always a difficult place to go, maybe it is better that I don't wish for anybody."
