Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud came off the bench and produced a Man of the Match performance, scoring two goals in a dramatic 3-2 win away at Southampton.

The Blues were trailing 2-0 on Saturday lunchtime when the Frenchman was introduced in place of Alvaro Morata in the 60th minute.

Antonio Conte's side scored three goals in a whirlwind eight minutes to send Southampton into further relegation trouble.

Giroud started the comeback with a brilliant header in the 70th minute and scored the winner just eight minutes later.

"I’m very happy for him [Giroud]", said Conte in his post-match press conference.

"We changed something in the second half and the difference was the approach and the will to fight. It was a great difference between both halves.

"In the previous games Morata scored against Leicester and Tottenham. I have two good strikers and I try to make the right decision."

What Giroud told Hazard when he came on

Chelsea's star man Eden Hazard was struggling to create chances before Giroud's introduction.

Giroud told Sky Sports: "I said when I came in, I said to Eden: 'Come on, we need to fight until the end. Keep believing!' I didn't tell him that we're going to score but I did believe that the first goal we scored would put them in a bad position.

"As long as mathematically it is possible, we are going to believe. Play the games one by one and we've got maybe five or six finals to play. Do the job and then we see about the other teams."

Giroud finally scored his first Premier League goal in Chelsea colours.

"Obviously I was waiting for it," said the former Arsenal striker. "I tried so many times to put it in the back of the net but sometimes you need a bit of luck. The thing is as a striker you need to keep going and keep the confidence high.

"Even if I play a bit less in the last few weeks I really want to help the team to bounce back in the second half.

"The beginning of the game is not what we wanted, not what we expected, but in football you always have the opportunity to step up and bounce back.

"We have shown great character, great team spirit and I am very pleased for the team today."

Giroud has surely earned him himself a starting berth for Thursday night's trip to Burnley.
