The snow is finally settling on a crazy week of Champions League football.Liverpool produced a sensational 5-1 aggregate win over Manchester City, AS Roma pulled off an improbable comeback against Barcelona and, craziest of all, Real Madrid avoided a disastrous loss to Juventus in a stoppage time melee.Just when it looked as if Juventus had forced extra time, Michael Oliver award Los Blancos a controversial penalty. Gianluigi Buffon was handed a red card for dissent and Cristiano Ronaldo converted from 12 yards to eliminate the Italians. To say Buffon wasn't happy with the matter, would be putting it mildly. In a heated post-match interview, Buffon stated: “To award such a doubtful, or super doubtful, penalty just ahead of the final whistle and destroy the work of a team who gave absolutely everything you have to have a rubbish bin instead of your heart."

Oliver has received sickening abuse

Sadly, the aftermath has been tough on Oliver himself. The Premier League official has received sickening abuse and messages since the decision, including threats against his family.

There's simply no place for it in football and numerous big names in the sport, such as Gary Lineker, have had their say on the matter.

While no one is by any means blaming Buffon for such abhorrent messages and threats, many have been saddened that he hasn't come out and condemned the reaction.

Buffon finally breaks his silence

Well, Saturday night saw Buffon end his silence on the matter and while he offered some concessions, football fans were left disappointed by his response.

Frankly, it's a side to the Italian we're not used to seeing.

Speaking to Le Iene television programme, he stated: “I don’t have to make up for anything, because I am a human being who puts passion, sentiment and anger into what I do.

"I'd say it all again. I had to let that out, even if it damaged my reputation. I felt defrauded of a night that can never be repeated.

"A referee with more experience would not have blown his whistle and decided not to become the protagonist of the match. He would’ve left it running, turned around and let the two teams fight it out in extra time. Let the pitch do the talking.

“I’m sure Oliver will have a great career in future, but he’s too young to officiate a match like that. The beauty, the imponderable nature of football, means that unfortunately this young man found himself in a situation that was too complex, too garbled and too big for him to deal with."

Well then, well then.

Football fans are disappointed

Unsurprisingly football fans were not impressed and actually pretty disappointed with an athlete who, by all accounts, usually carries himself with true class. Take a look at the reaction below:
