Manchester United gave a taster of what's to come next season with their breath-taking win over Manchester City last week.

The stage was set for Pep Guardiola's men to wrap up the Premier League title and the champagne was on ice by the time they raced into a 2-0 lead. None other than Paul Pogba had something to say about it, however.

In a turnaround that nobody saw coming, Pogba prodded past Ederson to give United hope before sensationally levelling the scores with an inch-perfect header.

Chris Smalling then played his part with a deft volley and United ran away 3-2 victors.

Fans have been hoping that such a brilliant team performance and such an immaculate showing from Pogba is a sign of things to come.

Mourinho gives interview on Pogba

It was a relief for supporters to see Pogba at his best again at the Etihad Stadium.

The 25-year-old hasn't had a poor season by any stretch of the imagination, but has frustrated at times and recent months have been marred by a reported feud with Jose Mourinho.

Matters seem to have calmed somewhat in recent weeks, though, and the Special One spoke about Pogba at great length in an interview with the Telegraph on Saturday night.

What Mourinho told Pogba after the derby

Aside from speaking generally about the club's record signing, he also gave an insight into his coaching of the star and even what he said to Pogba after his masterclass against City.

Mourinho revealed: “I’ll tell you what I told him after the match – I don’t expect you to be man of the match every week, I don’t expect you to score two goals every week. But I expect you to be consistent."

Cracking advice for Pogba, if ever we've heard it.

As the Manchester derby shows, Pogba can be a class above on his day but 'his day' doesn't come often enough. There's every reason to suggest Pogba would reach whole new heights if he could deliver top-class performances week in, week out.

Mourinho continued: "The challenge he has is to find a degree of stability and not to keep going from good match to so-so match to bad match.

"The best way to achieving that is to aim for stability at training level, during the working week, and from what I have seen in the past two or three weeks I am really happy with him."
