You'll struggle to find many Arsenal fans singing the praises of Shkodran Mustafi right now.The World Cup winner has endured a difficult season at the Emirates Stadium and a series of mistakes have blighted his form in 2018. Few games go by without Gooners feeling at least a little let down by their regular centre-back starter. The mistakes aren't letting up either with Mustafi entering the Newcastle game on the back of some criminal ball-watching against CSKA Moscow and statuesque positioning versus Southampton.Nevertheless, the German made an accomplished start to the game at St. James Park.He delivered a sumptuous long ball to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who proceeded to tee up Alexandre Lacazette for the opening goal.

Mustafi slow to react v Newcastle

However, Arsenal fans were soon given an unwanted taste of deja vu as, for the third time in a week, a striker beat Mustafi at the near post to score.

On this occasion it was Ayoze Perez who found the net, joining Shane Long and Fyodor Chalov on the list of players to expose Mustafi's lack of alertness.

Unfortunately for the German defender, too, none other than Nemanja Vidic was in the Sky Sports studio to critique his actions.

Vidic absolutely schools Mustafi

Few players know how to defend successfully in the Premier League like Vidic and the Manchester United legend quickly schooled Mustafi.

He even suggested the German should take a leaf out of Callum Chambers' took. Yes, really.

Vidic explained: "Great movement and a great ball by Shelvey but look at these two players - Mustafi and Chambers - and their different approaches to the situation.

"He [Chambers] is looking around him, Mustafi is facing just the ball.

"If you're a defender you cannot allow yourself to do that.

You have to be on your toes and you have to be sideways. In that case, you can run in all directions and you can see what is coming.

"You have to twist your body, look lively. In this situation, you just have to react.

"He's just looking at the ball, he doesn't know what's going on around him."

Arsenal fans applauding him

Even Arsenal fans couldn't help agreeing, too, check out the reaction:

Mustafi won't look back on the Perez goal with much pride and Vidic has hit the nail on the head with his advice.

The Arsenal man needs to have his whits about him in the penalty area, as Chambers did, and attack the ball when crosses come in.

When he's been at fault for three very similar goals in seven days, something's got to give.
