AJ Green is undoubtably one of the greatest wide receivers in the NFL today, but he doesn't feel he lived up to his own potential last season.
Green posted 75 catches for 1,078 yards and eight touchdowns in 2017. Those are numbers that most NFL wideouts would be satisfied with - but not Green. His 2017 season saw a drop in yards per catch and he dropped quite a few passes.
Couple that with the fact that the Bengals had a disappointing season, it's a tough pill to swallow for Green.
It was also noted by head coach Marvin Lewis that there was a big drop in big plays for the team this season, as Green had a career-low of six plays for 25 yards or more.
Green is hoping to have a monstrous 2018 season this year, and will have some help from a fresh new wideouts coach in Cincinnati.
While recently speaking to the media, Green opened up about his struggles last season and explained why exactly it didn't go according to plan. Here's what he had to say (quotes via Pro Football Talk):
“Biggest thing is there are going to be up-and-down seasons,” said Green.
“Coming from the last six years, I had some great seasons. This being one of my not-so-great ones, talking to the older guys like Larry (Fitzgerald) and just keeping your head up and staying positive through the season.
"Don’t get frustrated. Continue to work. That’s exactly what I learned. You can’t take anything for granted so I have to keep working.
“Just trying to do too much, not letting the game come to me,” Green said, via the Cincinnati Enquirer. “I was thinking too much.
"Thinking I have to make every play to get the offense going. Not being myself and just going out there and having fun like I usually do. …
"Seasons like that you have to change and grow. I felt this was definitely one to help me grow more as a person and channel my emotions a little bit better.”
What are your thoughts on Green being disappointed with his performance on the field last season? Do you think that the Bengals star is being too hard on himself? And do you think he can put up numbers similar to those he has in years past in 2018? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments section below!
