For the time being, it seems like the New Orleans Saints don't have any plans in place to groom an eventual replacement for 39-year-old Drew Brees.
With the 27th overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft the Saints are essentially out of the running for any of the top quarterback prospects in this year's draft - and head coach Sean Payton seems to be just fine with that.
Payton knows his team won't be landing any of the top signal callers later this month, which allows him to offer his honest analysis of the young men getting ready to make their NFL debuts.
In a recent interview with Peter King, Payton admitted that none of this year's prospects necessarily knocked his socks off as opposed to years past.
Payton noted that he doesn't see any superstar prospects the way he did back in 2012 with Andrew Luck and 2016 with Carson Wentz (quotes via Pro Football Talk):
“I don’t see Luck in this draft, and I don’t see Carson Wentz, who I liked a lot coming into the draft,” Payton said.
“I’d feel a little bit uneasy if I were at the top of this draft and I decided I had to have a quarterback.
"The pressure to get a quarterback is so great in this league, I get that. But we can’t create ’em.
"I wouldn’t be surprised if only one of these guys is left standing in four or five years, and if so, I’d guess it would be Sam Darnold.”
This year the Cleveland Browns hold the first overall pick in the NFL Draft, and the team is still on the hunt for a franchise quarterback that can help drag the organization out from the mud.
Cleveland could very well end up selecting yet another quarterback in the draft, with names such as Sam Darnold and Josh Allen likely at the top of their list. It should be interesting to see how the draft plays out.
What are your thoughts on Payton's comments regarding this year's class of quarterbacks coming out of the NFL Draft? Do you think that there are any elite prospects that Payton may be overlooking? And could the Saints take a chance on a young signal caller to eventually succeed Drew Brees? Let us know your thoughts on the matter in the comments section below!
