Manchester United's midfield is becoming an extremely problematic position.

Ander Herrera has not pushed on since being named Man United's player of the year last season, whereas Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick are set to leave the club.

Paul Pogba's problems have also been well documented in recent weeks, leaving question marks over his future.

Scott McTominay has been assured when called upon this year, but many are still unconvinced whether he should be a starter at Man United at this current time.

Therefore, it seems Jose Mourinho is going to spend big this summer as he looks to rectify the issues he has in the middle of midfield.

MOURINHO WANTS TWO PLAYERS

In January, Mourinho stated he would need to purchase two players if Carrick were to retire and Fellaini were to leave.

“It’s there in midfield where we need to – I’m not saying improve – but we need to get a player to compensate the situation of Michael," He stated. "If Marouane leaves, yes we have two gaps there, so let’s see what happens.”

With both scenarios almost certain to happen, the Portuguese manager has drawn up a list of five players he will target in the summer.

MOURINHO'S FIVE MAN SHORTLIST

According to the Independent, the Portuguese manager regards Toni Kroos as his 'ideal target'.

However, with Kroos likely to be an ambitious signing, Mourinho has also identified Napoli midfielder Jorginho as a potential signing, who he considers to be a 'greatly adept and more viable alternative'.

That would come as bad news to Liverpool fans, with the Italian being linked with a move to the Merseyside club for some time. With Emre Can's future uncertain, Liverpool need a replacement, and they could well battle with Man United for his signature in the summer.

Kroos and Jorginho are Man United's two main targets, but they are also retaining interest in Borussia Dortmund's Julian Weigl, Shakhtar Donetsk's Fred and Valencia's Carlos Soler.

With Manchester City dominating the Premier League this campaign, Mourinho will be doing everything in his power to compete next year.

There is no doubt that they would close the gap significantly if they were to sign Jorginho and Kroos.
