Jose Mourinho made the decision to make seven changes for Manchester United's game against Bournemouth on Wednesday night, but they still emerged victorious. With one eye clearly on Saturday's FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham, Mourinho decided to rest a plethora of the teams' stars including Nemanja Matic, Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez. That gave multiple fringe players such as Luke Shaw, Matteo Darmian and Marouane Fellaini the chance to impress. But United still managed to win 2-0, with Chris Smalling and Lukaku getting on the score-sheet.That consolidated Man United's position in second in the Premier League, four points clear of Liverpool.

CHRIS SMALLING TWEETS

Smalling put the away side in front when he tapped home from close range after good work from Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard.

That was Smalling's second goal in three weeks, and his third in eight games. Not too shabby for a defender.

And the 28-year-old took to Twitter to joke about his good run in front of goal, claiming he was making a late charge for the golden boot.

Good banter, Chris.

That was his fourth goal of the Premier League season, which is not bad at all for a defender. He needs just 27 more if he's to overtake Mohamed Salah in first for the race for the golden boot.

It seems Smalling fancies his chances of doing so.

JESSE LINGARD TWEETS SMALLING

Jesse Lingard also got involved on Twitter as he suggested he put it on a plate for his countryman.

And Smalling replied that it was 'all about the movement'.

MOURINHO WAS HAPPY WITH THE PERFORMANCE

Mourinho's side seem odds on to finish second in the Premier League, and he was happt with the way his side bounced back from the 1-0 defeat to West Brom last week.

“Yes [I got the response I wanted]," he explained after the game. "The players were very good. I think a good team performance – professional, controlled, a good effort, good responsibility, desire to play, to have the ball, to score.

"Also desire to cope with the defensive responsibilities against a fast team and a team who is not easy to play against and part of that good collective performance was good individual performances.

“Everything was different – everything was faster, everything was simple. The players were running without the ball to be in the right places defensively and attacking, not just to always have one more touch, one more flick, one more trick.

"Everything was good and I am happy that the result was also good because now the players can have that positive feeling.”
