Anthony Martial just can't catch a break at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho.

After a flying debut season at Old Trafford that saw 17 goals in 49 outings, the arrival of the Special One saw the Frenchman come down with a spot of second season syndrome.

Martial tumbled down the pecking order and scored just four Premier League goals across the 2016-17 campaign.

His third season at the club started very promisingly, though, and it seemed the winger had won over his manager - starting the campaign in sparkling fashion and regularly scoring across the winer months.

However, the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January has limited Martial's opportunities in the first-team and the goals and assists have dried up as a result.

As a result, Martial's future is in doubt with the Daily Mail even reporting that he will be offloaded in the summer alongside Paul Pogba, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind.

There would be no shortage of potential suitors for the promising 22-year-old with the likes of Lyon and Juventus linked with possible moves.

And with United looking increasingly set on offloading the Frenchman, they are beginning their search for a replacement and it seems they've found their man.

It's fair to say United might be a little disappointed with Mourinho's choice.

According to The Sun, it is Watford's Richarlison who the Red Devils will be chasing this summer and to the tune of £40 million at that.

The report discloses that United have run out of patience with Martial and that the player himself is eager for a move away.

Mourinho believes Richarlison would be the perfect man to slip into Martial's old position and, importantly, to realise his position in the pecking order at Old Trafford.

The United boss has been particularly impressed with the Brazilian's ability to play anywhere across the front line, allowing Marcus Rashford to become a second choice striker to Romelu Lukaku.

The Red Devils have scouted him on no less than 10 occasions this season and are believed to have won the race for his signature against the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea, Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

Is Richarlison the right man to replace Martial, though?

As far as straight swaps go, probably not - the the Watford man started the season well with five goals in his opening 12 games but hasn't found the net since November.

That being said, at age 20, United would buying into the player for his potential.

Even if Martial is just two years his senior, that is.
