Joe Namath is a big fan of 'outrageous' Baker Mayfield

Rose Bowl Game - Oklahoma v Georgia

Baker Mayfield has his fair share of doubters. His maturity, size, and athletic limitations have all come into question throughout the draft process.

Don't count Hall of Fame former Jets QB Joe Namath as one of those questioning Mayfield though.

In fact, the former Sooner is Namath's favourite signal caller in this draft class.

"I haven't met them, but I've watched them and the most outrageous, so to speak, that I've seen has been Mayfield," Namath told ESPN's Rich Cimini.

A loyal Alabama fan, Namath said he was watching Mayfield sling it around in the epic back-and-forth Rose Bowl game against Georgia, and didn't fancy his Crimson Tide having to face the Sooners and their inspirational QB in the College Football Playoff National Championship game.

"When I see his quick feet and I see him throwing every which way, I see the accuracy, I see the intensity, his hustle," the 74-year-old said. "Hey, I tell you, I wouldn't want to play against him. I didn't want Alabama to play against him."

Plays like this are probably what 'Broadway Joe' means by 'outrageous'...

The Hall of Famer's former team, the Jets, are picking third overall in Thursday's first round of the 2018 draft and Mayfield has been linked with the New York franchise for a while now.

It's a pick that Namath would certainly approve of, and he says he's liked the reigning Heisman Trophy winner for a while now.

"Hey, it wasn't just Georgia, it was a couple of years, early on, when I saw him play," he said of his enjoyment of Mayfield's play. "I saw him a couple of years back. I never saw him look bad. I don't know how tall he is. I still don't know big he is. Size can be a major asset, yes, size can be an asset in today's game. But Drew Brees, his size was questioned many times and he's one of the greatest players who's ever played."

Having the Jets' greatest QB's blessing is important for Mayfield, but only if GM Mike Maccagnan pulls the trigger on him at number three on Thursday.

The Jets could have the option of three of the draft's consensus top four signal callers though, and it will be a tough choice between Mayfield and one of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen and Josh Allen should that situation arise.

All depends on who the Browns and Giants go with ahead of them.
