Liverpool have one foot in the Champions League final after hammering AS Roma 5-2 at Anfield in their semi-final first leg on Tuesday night.

Jurgen Klopp’s side blew their Italian opponents away at Anfield, taking a remarkable 5-0 lead before the 70th minute thanks to a brace each from the excellent Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino plus another goal from Sadio Mane.

However, Klopp and his players were understandably disappointed after allowing Roma back into the tie with two late away goals. Edin Dzeko and Diego Perotti gave Roma a lifeline before the final whistle.

“Long term perfect performance for pretty much 80 minutes or so,” Klopp told BT Sport after the final whistle. “We made defensively one mistake. Penalty is not a penalty but that is the situation and now it is 5-2.

“Of course we would have been more happy with 5-0 or 5-1 but 5-2 is a fantastic result. We go there and try again.”

Liverpool will head to Rome next week knowing that one goal is likely to be enough to secure their place in next month’s final.

Barring a capitulation at the Stadio Olimpico, Liverpool will be playing either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich at the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium in Kiev on May 26.

Gary Neville's tweets during Liverpool 5-2 Roma

One man who will be praying that Roma can pull off another miracle, weeks after their remarkable comeback against Barcelona, is former Manchester United captain Gary Neville.

Neville was active on Twitter during Liverpool’s victory over Roma on Tuesday - and his tweets made for very entertaining reading. He summed up the feelings of United supporters throughout the evening, starting when Liverpool had just taken a 5-0 lead through Firmino.

“An unbearable few weeks ahead!” he tweeted, much to the amusement of his followers.

The mere thought of Liverpool potentially winning a sixth European Cup next month is too much for poor old Gary to stomach.

He then saw some light at the end of the tunnel

However, he then saw a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel when Dzeko pulled one back for the visitors.

Alongside a photo of Jim Carrey from the movie ‘Dumb and Dumber’, featuring the text ‘So you’re telling me there’s a chance’, Neville posted a crying with laughter emoji.

The Sky Sports pundit clearly still felt the tie was still over at this point and that Dzeko’s goal was nothing more than a consolation.

However, when Perotti made it 5-2 from the penalty spot, Neville got a little more excited…

Like his fellow United supporters, Neville will be hoping that Roma can pull off the unthinkable at their home ground next week.

Don’t hold your breath, Gary!
