It’s incredible to think that some Liverpool fans will be slightly disappointed at leading Roma 5-2 at the halfway stage of their Champions League semi-final tie.

With 80 minutes played in Tuesday’s first leg at Anfield, Liverpool had one foot in the final. They were leading Roma 5-0 and appeared comfortable.

But two late goals from the Italians, courtesy of Edin Dzeko and Diego Perotti, has left a different taste to proceedings.

It’s now impossible to forget about what Roma did in the previous round, when they came back from 4-1 down to Barcelona to win 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico to reach the final four.

That same scoreline in next Wednesday’s return fixture and Liverpool will suffer the same fate as Barcelona.

They will be without Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for the trip to Italy after the England international suffered what appears to be a serious knee injury.

The 24-year-old went down after a challenge on Aleksandar Kolarov in the 15th minute and had to leave the pitch on a stretcher.

What Gerrard said

"It's probably a really bad injury," Klopp said about Oxlade-Chamberlain’s injury at full-time. “If you can say that already before the scan then it's never good news."

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been superb for Liverpool recently - something that Steven Gerrard acknowledged when he heard Klopp’s words.

“He’s a player in fantastic form, playing probably the best football of his career, really happy, enjoying himself and if it is going to be long-term, it’s going to be a massive blow for him,” Gerrard said on BT Sport.

“Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it’s not.”

Gerrard added: “I think you can tell by his reaction - he knew straight away.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain’s hopes of representing England at the World Cup in Russia are now in jeopardy.

What’s doubly saddening is that the midfielder was forced to miss the 2014 competition after suffering a knee injury in a warm-up game - and he looks set for more heartache.

The Ox has earned a spot in his favoured midfield position for Liverpool with a number of impresses performances and it would be an almighty shame if his season was to end like this, so close to a Champions League final and a World Cup.
