Following his victory over Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 34, it marked the one-year anniversary of The Beast finally picking up a victory over Goldberg and claiming the Universal Championship in the process.
Since then, Lesnar has steamrolled his way through the little opposition he has faced for the gold, such as Samoa Joe, Reigns and Braun Strowman.
UNIVERSAL CHAMPION
Having held the title for over one year now, WWE fans are generally in agreement that The Beast is finally going to drop the championship on Friday, April 27 at the Greatest Royal Rumble event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
It’s easy to see why this is the case. Not only does it allow The Big Dog to claim the gold in front of a more receptive crowd compared to the expected toxic atmosphere he’d receive if he won on US soil, but also because Lesnar’s interest in returning to the UFC is clear for all to see.
When that happens, though, remains to be seen as WWE swerved the audience in New Orleans too, despite everyone being certain that he would lose.
However, should Reigns defeat Lesnar in the Middle East, then the latter will fall short of breaking a ‘record’ in the WWE which the company would probably prefer to be erased.
Although the late Bruno Sammartino holds the rightful record, the company made a huge deal out of CM Punk’s 434-day reign as WWE Champion, calling it the longest world title reign in the modern era.

It was noted on Wrestling Observer Live this week that if WWE wants Lesnar to break Punk’s record, he’s going to need to hold the Universal Championship through the Money in the Bank pay-per-view.
While they speculated that he could lose it right after the event, he still needs to hold the title until at least June 19th, 2018. The question everyone is rightfully asking, though, is whether or not Lesnar will actually stick around for that long, especially since there is so much mystery surrounding the new lucrative contract he has signed.
Some reports have stated that it’s a multi-year deal, others have claimed it’s only short term while outlets have also suggested he is being paid per appearance instead.
If WWE is genuinely serious about removing Punk from their history, especially with the lawsuit hearing coming up, then they might decide to keep Lesnar as the Universal Champion so he can eventually topple Punk’s record.
So, it looks like Lesnar only needs to come through the Greatest Royal Rumble event unscathed. With the title not being up for grabs at Backlash - unless Reigns is the champion - then Lesnar has a clear path to the Money in the Bank event.
