It should have been yet another perfect European night at Anfield against Roma in their Champions League semi-final first-leg.

However, despite the 5-2 victory, the night was marred before the match even kicked off.

Ugly scenes saw Roma ultras attack a group of Liverpool fans, leaving one supporter in a critical condition.

That supporter has been named as Sean Cox, 53, from Ireland and he’s currently in hospital with a serious head injury.

Two men from Rome, aged 20 and 29, have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

In a statement from the Italian club, they said they condemned in "the strongest possible terms the abhorrent behaviour of a small minority of travelling fans who brought shame on the club and the vast majority of Roma's well-behaved supporters".

Meanwhile, a Liverpool club statement read: "Liverpool Football Club is shocked and appalled after a Liverpool supporter was left in a critical condition having been attacked prior to the Champions League fixture against AS Roma.

LIVERPOOL ARE OFFERING THEIR SUPPORT

“Our thoughts, in the first instance, are with the victim and his family at this very traumatic time. We will be offering them our full support.

“The club has been liaising with the emergency services since the incident occurred and will continue to do so.”

Following Liverpool’s incredible 5-2 victory over Roma, fans turned their attentions to the injured supporter.

And to help him and his family out, they’ve set up a GoFundMe page.

It states: “Can everyone please give a donation towards the costs of Sean Cox's medical bills and the costs incurred for his family to stay by his side while he recovers in hospital in Liverpool.”

A brilliant gesture.

The page has a goal of $5,000 and it’s already received $3,600 at the time of writing.

It surely won’t be long until the page reaches its goal.

Let’s just hope Mr. Cox makes a full recovery.
