Liverpool's 5-2 win over Roma in the Champions League had quite a few negatives for the Reds.

Not only did Jurgen Klopp's side surrender two away goals to the Serie A side, but key midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was stretchered off with what looked like a serious injury.

And Liverpool's worst nightmare was confirmed on Wednesday as it was revealed that he would be out for the remainder of the season.

Oxlade-Chamberlain could miss up to nine months with the knee injury, ruling him out of Gareth Southgate's England squad for the World Cup.

After impressing in a central midfield role of late, the news will be a huge blow to the Three Lions boss as well.

The £40m man was a key player in recent friendlies vs Italy and Holland, so Southgate will have to think long and hard about how to replace the 24-year-old.

Dele Alli, Jack Wilshere and Jonjo Shelvey are some of the names that are being mentioned, but England fans have other ideas.

After the news was broken by Liverpool's official Twitter account, fans sent their well wishes to Oxlade-Chamberlain and then proclaimed that England should look to bring James Milner out of retirement.

FANS REACT TO OX'S INJURY

After watching Milner's displays in the two legs vs Manchester City and against Roma on Tuesday evening, England would be fools not to at least get in contact.

Alongside Jordan Henderson, the Three Lions would have two players in midfield who know each other inside out, while Milner's work ethic would surely be beneficial to the likes of Jesse Lingard and Raheem Sterling.

England are going into the tournament with a fairly young team compared to 2014 and it surely wouldn't hurt to bolster the ranks with another player who's been around the block a few times.

However, Milner has stated his desire to stay retired internationally for club reasons on numerous occasions.

Michael Carrick anyone?
